The meteoroid is said to have travelled at a speed of 17.70 kilometer per second when it hit the Indian Deccan Plateau, forming one of the largest basalt impact craters on earth. Just three other spots like this exist in the world and this site has been studied extensively by researchers from across the globe. Surrounded by lush green forests and historic temples, the site is classified as a National Geological Monument and also protected under the Ramsar Convention.
